Calgary Dentist can help you stop snoring

This spring finds some changes in our dental practice. Over the past 6 months, I have been spending time with the specialists at the Foothills Medical Centre Sleep Clinic. The clinic treats various sleep disorders from simple snoring to the more serious sleep apnea. Previously, sleep disorders were diagnosed with an overnight sleep study at a hospital. New technologies have evolved with the development of home sleep recorders.

Our office is now offering this technology. Once the home sleep study is completed, we email the data to be interpreted by a sleep specialist. The results are then returned to us, and a diagnosis is established. Over the last 10 years, we have helped a number of individuals with sleep apnea. Following training in the United States and Foothills Sleep Clinic over the last year, we are now able to offer treatment to more individuals. To date we have a 90% success rate.[l

Now there is an effective way to control snoring and obstructive sleep apnea that is an alternative to cumbersome CPAP devices. A small device, similar to an orthodontic appliance, can be an alternative to CPAP machines and, in some cases, be the first choice for treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

Oral Appliances are placed in the mouth and are worn much like an orthodontic appliance or sports mouth protector. They are worn during sleep to prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat so that the airway stays open during sleep. The appliances promote adequate air intake and help to provide normal sleep in people who snore and have a medical condition known as sleep apnea. Oral appliances can be used alone or in conjunction with other means of therapy such as continuous positive air pressure (CPAP). Determination of proper therapy can only be made by joint consultation of your dentist and sleep physician.
